•
INDIVIDUAL SPECIES SEEDINGS
This study was designed to evaluate 75 species, varieties of
species, or seed source of a particular species with respect to the
_ Colowyo site. The study also provides a visual orientation to the
individual species for those not familiar with them.
METHODS
The species evaluated in this study were seeded on various dates.
• Sixty-three species were planted on October 2 through 6, 1975.
Seven species were planted on April 28, 1976. One species (sudan
grass) was planted on June 12, 1976. Seven additional species t•,ere
planted on October 29, 1976. Finally, on September 28, 1977, all
three replications of oak and chokecherry were reseeded. Three of
the species planted in the fall of 1975 have since been deleted
because of sparse or no stand. Each species seeding was replicated
3 times, when possible, and assigned a number for easier reference
(Table 1).
The seeded was prepared by making furrows 1 foot apart with a
hoe. The furrow rows are oriented in an east-west direction, and
each species seeding consists of four rows 20 feet .long. The west
half of each row in all seedin9s was fertilized during April, 1976,
with NH4N03 at a rate of 60 lb/N/A. Seeds were hand sown into the
furrows and covered by a light raking.
Replication I (Figures 1 & 2) is along the south fenceline just
west of the main gate. Replication II (Figures 1 & 3) is in the
• southwest corner, and replication III (Figures 1 & 4) is in the
northwest corner of the study site. Replication I was hand weeded
in 1976, 1977, and 1978, to allow someone unfamiliar with the seeci~s
planted to view that species alone and also to eli~oinata competition
from weedy species.
