BACY.GROUND
This study was set up to simulate the aspect, topography, and
soils on the majority of the area to be mined on the Colowyo site.
The revegetation test plot is located on an 18% north-facing slope
. - at an elevation of 7,400 feet. The surface of the study site was
prepared by removing the brush, then stripping off the top one-inch
of soil to remove roots, rhizomes, and sod. After the stripping
operations, the top one-foot of soil was thoroughly mixed by removing
the soil from one area of the plot and redistributing it over another.
The revegetation plot was fenced with a 9-foot deer fence and a 4-foot
rodent fence with 2 feet of the rodent fence buried.
Each of the individual studies within the revegetation plot are
designed to provide information on techniques of establishing shrubs
considering competition and erosion control. The eight studies can
be broken down into five major categories:
1. Individual species seedings using both native and
introduced species.
2. Runoff plots.which will provide information on
sediment and water yield as affected by seeding
management practices.
3. Competition studies involving fertility, seeding
management practices, and species combinations.
4. Shrub transplanting studies.
5. Studies involving the establishment of shrubs through
reduced herbaceous competition.
The term serviceberry as used generally in this report refers
to the native serviceberry shruhs on the Colowyo site, .amel.rrrtcltier
alnifelia. Serv_iceberry seed or seedlings from other sources are
• not necessarily this species. When other common names such as
_ bitterbrush, chokecherry, oak, or snowberry are used, they are in
reference to Purshia tride~ttata, Prwtus vir~irtiarvz, Quercus galvbf:lzi.,
3
