• GP,ASSES
After four complete growing seasons, the 1975 seedings have
produced excellent stands for most of the grass species (Table )
In particular the wheatgrasses and wildryes were extremely vigorous,
- and thusly inhibited.invasion by volunteer species within the
seedings. Biomass production for the wheatgrasses seeded in 1975
ranged from 1835 k9/ha to 3072 kg/ha (Appendix Table ). Biomass
production for the wildryes ranged from 1099 kg/ha to 4931 kg/ha.
Native grasses such as Bromus marginatus and Stipa Columbiana
have established well and should be considered in the composition
of a "native mix". Bluegrass and fescue stands are improved over
last year and now provide a moderate amount of cover.
• Species seeded in the spring of 1976 have far the most part
established stands comparable to those seeded in the fall of 1975.
The exception to this is sudangrass, an annual planted simply to
evaluate asa cover crop. Good cover was provided by late summer
in 1976 but no sudangrass reestablished from seed in following
years. sudangrass should definitely be considered if a warm
season cover crop is to be used in a reclamation program.
The species seeded in the fall of 1976 have produced extremely
sparse stands. This reflects the extremely low 1976 winter and
1977 spring precipitation experienced at the Colowyo site.
•
