• l2. Topsoil HandlinE and Storage

EXHIBIT D -MINING PLAN (continued)
Information on the soil types and depths on the existing site is given in Exhibit [ -Soils Informa-
tion. For the mine operation on the east side of the drainage, 15.2 acres will be disturbed for pit
mining and facilities. Although the SCS general soils information estimates the soil depth can be as
deep as 60 inches, our observation from test holes on the property suggests a more realistic figure
of 4 to 8 inches, averaging 7 inches, of salvageable soils. It is expected that the topsoil stripping
depth is 6-8 inches over this area. At an average depth of 7", this will require topsoil storage of
14,300 cy. The south berm will handle 7800 cy and the remaining 6500 cy will be stored in the
excess stockpile located west of the drainage, as shown on Exhibit C-2. When mining is completed
on the area east of the drainage, the excess topsoil and newly stripped soil from the west side will
be used to reclaim the east side. The west side pit area will encompass 12.4 acres and will require
the storage of 11670 cy of topsoil, using an average stripping depth of 7 inches. Since the south
berm will remain intact with a volume of 7800 cy, an excess storage area east of the drainage must
• be utilized. This area is also shown on Map Exhibit C-2 and will handle a volume of 3870 cy.
[f additional depth of valuable soil is encountered during stripping, the excess storage piles will be
increased in size. All topsoil will be excavated and placed to minimize compaction and in no case
will the stockpile or berm height exceed 10 feet. All piles will be immediately broadcast seeded
with a mixture of smooth brome, western wheat and crested wheatgrass in equal proportions at a
rate of 19 pls/acre.
Small berms of 18" height of soil will be placed around the excess piles and the downstream side of
the south berm so that no soil is eroded into the pit area and no pit runoff is allowed to encounter
the stockpiled soil.
•
Carol Ann Pemut CDMG Application 22
