December 28, 1980
Page 4
Range Management Plan
• If for example 300 acres are available for grazing,
the total AUM would be calculated by the following:
0.30 AUM/acre x 300 acres = 90 AUDI

Thus there are 90 AUM available if there has been
no previous grazing. However some grazing from deer and
elk is anticipated. In order to compensate for this, the
following formula is used.
Note: Assume that wildlife have used 10$ of the
grazing capacity.
Therefore: 90 AUM x (100 - 10$) = 81 AUM
We have 31'AUM available for the proposed grazing
period of June 30 - August 31.
81 AUM = q0.5 AU
2 Months
31.
Thus there will be 40.5 AU available June 30 - August
Table 3 is a guide which may be used to determine how
many animals may be grazed on a given animal-unit based
grazing plan.
If there are 90.5 animal units available, 40 cows or
180 sheep could be grazed on the 300 acres of reclaimed
land from June 30 to August 31.
•
