ADZ
•
Mr. Brent Anderson
Page Three
October 1, 1990
2) Evidence of sheet runoff and initial surface erosion is apparent on
a strip approximately 20 feet wide and 150 feet long on the slope
paralleling the southeast boundary of the partially enclosed basin.
Given the level of vegetative re-establishment and limited width of
the effected area, straw bales should be placed and staked down in ~^ ,
a shallow "V" configuration at approximately 50 foot intervals to ~ i
break-up sheet flow and trap any suspended sediment.'
3) Beginning approximately 200 feet east of the northwest corner of
the Pit 5 reclaimed area, a contour ditch parallels the top of the
reclaimed slope discharging to the ditch on the west side of the
temporary access road. Ditch gradient appears to be 3 - 4 percent
and some erosion and downcutting of the ditch through the reclaimed
spoils is evident. While the ditch serves a useful purpose,
limiting erosion on fill outslopes, ditch gradient needs to be
reduced to control channel erosion and downcutting. Beginning ate
the same point of initiation, a new ditch should be established=
higher on the slope at a gradient of no more than 1 percent. Theo
• old ditch should be filled in and regraded. and both old and new
ditch areas should be reseeded and mulched:
4). The sideslopes adjacent to the lower end of the temporary access
road and extending around the corner approximately 200 feet to the
west show some evidence of sheet flow and initial surface erosion.
A contour furrow with maximum gradient of 1 percent should bey j';
-established approximately-half-way down the slope on either side of ~' +~
the road.
5)~ Some rill and gully erosion is evident on and along the sides of
the Pit 5 temporary access road. Water bars should ,be established ~--;
perpendicular to the road at an interval of 10 - 100 feet, existing'' =•
rill and gully erosion should be repaired, effected areas should be~ =
reseeded and mulched, and roadside ditches should be stabilized by' ~•
placing and staking straw bales every 50 - 70 feet.
Pit 6 Area
The Pit 6 reclaimed area consists of several relatively steeply sloping
hillside segments and a partially enclosed basin area. Reclamation in the
Pit 6 area included backfilling of contour mined and auger bench areas,
grading to a stable configuration, topsoil replacement, and reseeding with a
mixture of native and introduced grasses and fortis. Reclamation of Pit 6 was
completed in 1985.
• The inspection of Pit 6 consisted of a walking traverse from south to north
across the reclaimed area with closer inspection of the following areas:
The head of the fill slope above the basin area and access road on
the south end of Pit 6
