I 70-1(36)
Grand Valley E & W
SUMMARY
The Una Pit is located approximately 4~ miles southwest of Grand Valley
on U.S. 6 and approximately % mile south. The pit area is between the
Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad R.O.W. and the Colorado River.
The pit area is located on private ground owned by the following:
Charles V. Woodard, Warren E. Gardner,•John Jebsen, Wyndell LaFaye Bishop,
and Wm. E. Foster. The Division of Highways holds an option on the pit
at this time and has had one for several years.
Materials from the pit will be used for the construction of 170 in the Una
area. The materials will be used for embankment, stabilization and wearing
course materials.
The pit is a Colorado River deposit of sand and gravel with soil overburden.
The average depth of soil overburden is 4 feet and the average depth of
sand and gravel is 22 feet. The total disturbed area including the plant
and stockpile area is 94.03 acres.
The pit area is mostly pastureland with some area of sagebrush and willows.
The large cottonwood trees between the pit area and the river are to be
saved.
The mining operation will start with clearing the brush from the areas to
be mined. The soil overburden will then be stripped from the pit area.
The top one (1) foot of this material will be stockpiled for use in re-
claiming the disturbed areas. Any excess of this material may be used on
the project if needed. If not needed, it will also be stockpiled and used
to reclaim the pit. The sand and gravel will be mined from west to east
taking the full depth of usable material. This material will either be
hauled directly to the project or processed and stockpiled in the appropriate
areas. Pumping of the pit will be required to excavate the pit, the pumped
water will be settled before going into the Colorado River.
IIpon completion of the mining operation, the pit slopes will be graded and
left no steeper than 3:1. A small island will be left in Pit Area No. 2.
All disturbed areas will be covered with from 6" to one foot of soil over-
burden. All trash and waste material will be removed from the area. The
disturbed areas will then be reclaimed as outlined in the reclamation plan.
