WILDLIFE STATEMENT <br />The following information is provided for use by the Mined Land Reclamation Board <br />in consideration of a mini ng permit for "Una Pit" , Colorado Division of <br />Highwavs, c/o R. G. Lucas, P. 0. Box 2107, Grand Junction, CO 81502 <br />The Colorado Division of Wildlife does hereby find that the impact of this operation <br />on wildlife will be: XX Minor Moderate Major <br />Mine Location: <br />SE;SW; Sec.27, NW;NW', Sec.34, T7S, R96W, 6th P.M. <br />Wildlife Species List: (May be attached) <br />Canada goose Lesser scaup ~ Bald eagle <br />Mallard Common goldeneye Marsh hawk <br />Gadwall Common merganser American kestrel <br />Pintail Red-tailed hawk Killdeer <br />American Widgeon Golden eagle Mourning dove <br />Great horned owl <br />Jackrabbit <br />Cottontail rabbit <br />Coyote <br />Mule deer <br />Endangered Species Impacted: <br />1 Bald eagles could be impacted by loss of mature cottonwood trees. There <br />could also be long-term effects due to the loss of areas potentially <br />suitable for cottonwood tree regeneration. <br />l Vegetation Communities: (May be attached) <br />J The riverbank, an old farmyard, and the area where the pit doglegs to the <br />1 north is mature riparian forest with a cottonwood crown. The res± of <br />the area is either fallow grassland or shrubland dominated by a grease- <br />wood crown. <br />Assessment of Impact: (May be attached) <br />The location of this pit will minimize adverse impacts on wildlife. . <br />Species such as cottontail rabbit and jackrabbit will be adversely <br />affected, but many species of waterfowl should benefit from the pit. <br />Adverse impacts on bald eagles could be avoided by preserving cottonwoods <br />Reclamation/Mitigation Recommendations: (May be attached) (SEE ATTACHED SHEET) <br />1. Leave mature cottonwoods on islands if necessary. Attempt to incor- <br /> porate into the pit the group of trees around an old homestead on the <br /> site. <br />2. An irregular shoreline a nd bottom profi le will encourage better fish <br /> productivity. <br />3. Leave or construct 3 or 4 bare islands (do not revegetate) for Canada <br /> goose breeding purposes. <br />4. Re-seed and re-vegetate with native spe cies of grasses, fortis, shrubs, <br /> and trees. DOW will rec ommend specific species and sources upon reque°• <br />Prepared by W.D.
