The <br />native vegetation is mainly grass. Elevation is 5,500 to 6,500 feet. The <br />average annual precipitation is about 13 to 15 inches, the average annual <br />air temperature is 49 to 53 degrees F, and the average frost-free season is <br />S <br />125 to ],~0 days. <br />ys <br />This unit is,~i percent ll.idway gravelly clay loam, percent Ildefonso <br />gravelly loam, and 10 percent Kim loan. ;he t•tidway soil is on steep side <br />slopes, the Ildefonso soil is on ridgetops and hilltops, and the Kim soil <br />is on foot slopes and in small areas on hilltops. <br />Included in this unit are shall areas of shale outcrop m steep side <br />slopes. <br />The tlidway soil is shallow and well drained. It formed in ces.iduun <br />derived dominantly from shale. 'Typically, the surface layec is gravelly <br />clay loan 4 inches thick. The underlying material .is silty clay loan 15 <br />inches deep over f ractured hoed shale. The soil is moderately alkaline and <br />calcareous throughout. Depth to bedrock ranges from 10 to 20 inches. <br />Permeability of the I~tidway soil is slow. <br />Available tieter capacity .is very low. Effective rooting depth is 10 to 20 <br />inches. Aanoff is rapid, and the hazatt3 of water erosirn is very high. <br />The Ildefonso soil is deep and somewhat excessively drained. It formed <br />in gravelly alluvi~an. Typically, the surface layer is very gravelly loam 4 <br />.inches thick. The underlying material to a depth of 60 inches or more is <br />very gravelly sandy loam. Depth to stale commonly ranges fttm 4 to 8 feet. <br />The soil is alkaline and calcareous throughout. <br />
