Al Winters, Manager
Bulldog Mountain Hine
Creede, Colorado. 81130
In accorGance with your request that :ve review and study the pollutional
aspects of the Bulldog Mountain Mine drainage water, and prepare reco:rrnenda-
tions related to pollutional treatment of the drainage water, ire submit the
attached report. The report is entitled "k'ater- Quality Aspects of lJillogr
Creek and Bulldog Mountain Hine, Creede, Colorado."
An important aspect of our study and analysis was the collection of water
~• quality data for the mine drainage water at several points in the Willogr
Creek Basin. This field data collected during the spring of 1$75 has been
correlated with significant other data t~rhich has been collected by various
agencies since 1966, and overall, this water quality data provides a good
basis for deFininy tha problems and outling alternative water quality im-
provernent measures. .
An important aspect o` our effort has been to define the conceptual feasi-
bility of stream basin solutions for 4lilloar Creek. As you knot, 4filloar
Creek represents one of the State of Colorado's difficult water quality
proSiems, ancf as a result, it is currently unclassified by the Water Quality
Control Commission. '
~•
Tlie significance of a stream basin solution relates to the fact that tl:e over-
all 4lillow Creek basin is a problem in terms of toxic pollutants. Zinc has
been singled out as the most important parameter, During the 1975 sampling
program, the Bulldog Mountain Mine drainage water contributed i to 13 percent
to the surface water zinc loading in Willow Creek. There teas evidence of
significant' ground water contarrrination in lower 1•lillow Creek. Since ground
g:aier samples were not ta'ren, it was not possible to determine the relative
contribution of this source. If ibis source grere taken into consideration,
the Bulldog Iountain Nir,e percenlagr_ contribution grould be less. TreaUaent
of the Bulldog Fountain Fiine water grould not permit 4lillot~ Creak to sustain
any type of fish life, and iC would continue to be unsuitable as irritation
grater. if the treated water were to be discharged to 4lillow Creek, it grould
be recontaminated prior to joining the Rio Grande and o-rould nut lessen the
overall pollutant impact on the Rio Grande to a major degree.
- .. .. -_.. - 157 -
