This site was considered
because it caws suitable from n construction standpoint and was
neat the discharge point. The site was rejected because of the
greater pipe dista,-.ces necessary to reach this site compared to
the proposed site. An estimated savings of $40,000 may be
realized in the selection of the proposed site, rather than the
site near the flotation mill.
5. Construct Accelerateion Tlticlclter Plant Opposite the Aline Portal
In the narrow canyon formed by iJic~dy Gulch, site selection is
limited. Homestake desires a site close to the point of discharge
(mine portal), a site that will not interfere with the mining
operation, and a site that will not take a great deal of preparation,
thereby resulting in the least amount of environmental impact and
COS t.
Only tW0 S1teS SJere located that Islet the criteria. The site near
t}te flotation mill and the site opposite the mine portal. All
other sites Would interfere with existing operations, be too far
from tlce point of discharge or require a great deal of site
preparation. T1te site near the flotatimt mill was tejecEed
because of the added expense.
The alternative of constructing an acceleration thicl:ner plant
opposite the mine portal was selected to accomplish the results
sought in this proposal.
V. ENVIRON`IENTAL It4PACTS 0;: SELECTED ALTERNATIVE
If the proposed action is initiated, the activities that will result in
important environmental, social, and economic impacts include placing
man-made facilities on the landscape, preparation and levelling of the
plant site, and construction of the plant.
Environmental effects include soil and vegetative disturbance, minor
soil erosion, minor noise and air pollution, a minor increase lit water
quality and modification of the landscape. 1'he immediate social and
economic benefits of the project include employment opportnuities for
the construction workers and added income to the .local merchants through
transactions with these people.
Fa~.orable Effects:
The construction of the plant will allow llomestake to meet the
~• requirements of its AIPDES Permit as requires by the Colorado Dapartment
of F[ealth. In meeting this requirement, llomestake will be able to
continue its operations as planned. (APYEidDIX I.) The primary
- 142 -
