Bulkhead Design
Page 6
•
Design
Wall to be 24" thick, solid reinforced concrete. The concrete shall have
a compressive strength of. at least 3000 psi in 28 days. Both sides of the
wall shall be reinforced vertically with #10 bars at 4" center ~:o center.
Both sides of the wall shall be reinforced horizontally with #8 bars at
12" center to center. Stirrups shall be 0-shaped made from #4 bars spaced
8 3/4" center to center, vertically. Each stirrup shall encompass 3 #10
bars (see design sketches). The bars shall have f'y = 60,000 psi and be ASTM
A572 - 72 Gr. 60. The bulkheads shall have a height of no more than 10 feet.
The bulkhead shall be hitch a minimum of 12" into the roof, ribs and floor.
The gap made by hitching the bulkhead will be filled in with concrete.
Symbols
Shear Notation Summary:
Av =area of shear reinforcement within a distance s, or total cross
sectional area of one stirrup (sq. in.)
b = width of rectangular beam (in.)
• h = overall thickness of member (in.)
s = spacing of stirrups (in.)
Y~ =nominal permissible shear stress carried by concrete
~y = nominal total design (ultimate) shear stress
Y = (/u- /~ ) =excess shear to be resisted by stirrups
Reference: "Simplified Design of Reinforced Concrete" by Harry ParXer;
Fourth Edition; Copyright 1975, John Wiley and Sons, Inc.
American Concrete Institute's "Building Code Requirements for Reinforced
Concrete (ACI 318-71).
