dipnetting produced only fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas),
1981 sampling yielded both fathead minows and creek chub
'- (Semotilus atromaculatus).
Foidel Creek
Because all of the previously established stations on this
creek were dry, only the newly created Station 5 at the beaver
pond produced fish. Dipnetting captured 100 fathead minnows (Table
' 10) .
' Fish density decreased notably between stations 2 and 3 (Table
11). This is also a large drop in fish numbers for Station 3
between 1980 and 1981 results (299 versus 14, respectively).
' This difference between this yearly abundance appears to be largely
attributable to the absence of speckled dace (Rhinichthes
sue) in the 1981 sampling results versus the 1980 results
' in which this species comprised 528 of the total number of 299
fish per 100 m (328 ft) length (Harney-White Ecological
Consultants, 1981). Although no mottled sculpin (Cottus
Vii) were captured in this year's survey, a fish species
previously unreported in the study area was found. This species,
flannelmouth sucker (Catostomus latipinnis) occurred in both
_ stations 2 and 3. Station 2 provided the greatest density and
number df taxa of the three stations. Overall, this is a moderate
i- to large (Station 3) decrease in the numbers of fish captured
this year as opposed to last year (Harney-White Ecological
Consultants, 1981).
The fish population of Station 1 was dominated by creek chub
and speckled dace (Table 12). Three different species of sucker
were present but uncommon. Station 2 had a greater number of
suckers, but species composition was still heavily weighted toward
creek chub, followed by fathead minnow. Station 2 had a higher
density of fish than Station 1, but fewer species. Species
composition for the two stations didn't differ greatly from last
year's conditions, but total numbers for Station 1 are
approximately 158 of the 1980 sampling results. Harney-White
Ecological Consultants, Inc. (1981) reports that sampling of
Station 2 in 1975 and 1979 produced only 13 and 8 fish,
respectively. This level of fish abundance is considerably lower
than found in recent years.
•
24
