An aluminum-based drill stem joint lubricant was used at all 1991 Phase II sample sites. •
The four holes were drilled exclusively with air since good circulation was maintained.
Sites 30488, 30498, and 30518 were ell dry holes. ~Sita 30508 was dry to 24.8 feet and_~
artesian water was encountered below this depth.
The core drilling and sampling methods were identical to those previously described for
Phase I. Overburden cuttings (chip samples) were collected exclusively with air from all
four holes. Chip samples were collected on two-foot vertical increments from the soil
surface to the top of coal for Sites 30488, 30498, end 30518. Core samples were collected
at Site 30508 from 24.8 feet to 91.8 feet once ground water was encountered. Chip samples
were collected with sampling buckets by using a 4-3/4-inch Tricone rock bit. A
geophysical log which included density, resistivity, end natural gamma was also completed
for each hole. The core end chip samples were described in the field by the driller and
subsequently by a soil scientist. The li thalogy for these sites is presented in Appendix
b-1. Chip samples were composited in the field according to the lithologic and
stratigraphic descriptions. Once ell chip samples end cores were drilled, sampled,
described, and boxed, they were shipped by truck to InterNountein Lab in Farmington, Neu
Mexico. •
Parameter Selection - Phase f. The Phase 1 overburden sampling and analyses plan for
Yoast was developed after en extensive review of recent literature, consultation with
CMLRD end OSMRE, and previous sampl in9 conducted at the Seneca II and II-N Mines. The
Phase I plan was implemented prior to existing Colorado guidelines (CMLRD, 1982) and prior
to developing the Current proposed permit boundary.
The following chemical end physical parameters were determined for the Phase I evaluation
of overburden material in the Toast study area:
- Paste pN
- Paste extract conductivity (EC) in nxnhoslcm at 25°C
- Saturation Percentage (SP)
- Particle Size (X sand, silt, and clay)
- Nater Soluble Cations Calcium (Ca), Magnesium (Ng), and Sodium (Na)
- Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR)
- Not water extractable Boron (8) and Selenium (Se)
- Ammonium oxalate extractable Molybdenum (MO) •
- Sulfur (S) or Acid Potential (AP)
16
