' 1986 ANNUAL HYDROLOGIC REPORT ~ ~ ~ I) ~`®k~
' OCTOBER 1985 THRU SEPTEFIBER 1986 ,}QN ~ 1987
MINED LAND
ItJTRODUCTION RECLAMA7ipN DIVISIOR~
The North Thompson Creek Mines were in temporary cessation at the beginning
' of this hydrologic year. In January 1986 a technical revision was applied
for requesting permission to reduce the hydrologic monitoring requirements.
TR-1 was approved t4arch 24, 1986 reducing part of the requirements and eliminating
others.
1 CMLRD was notified of Snowmass Coal Company's intent to go into permanent cessation
August 15, 1986. The environmentalist left in March due to eminent layoff
' and was not replaced. Environmental monitoring continued to be done by Western
Associated Coal Corp., Snowmass' managing partner, out of their Palisade office.
The confusion over permanent cessation, the change in monitoring personnel
and the change in monitoring schedule resulted in several gaps in monitoring.
No climatological information was taken this hydrologic year; therefore, there
is no information in Appendix I.
SURFACE WATER QUALITY
Appendix II contains the hydrologic information gathered for North Thompson
Creek, Middle Thompson Creek and the Roaring Fork River. tonitoring requirements
on the Roaring Fork River were eliminated and requirements on the creeks were
' reduced.
On the Roaring fork the upper and lower readings continued to exhibit little
change. Middle Thompson Creek also showed little change between the upper
' and lower readings. The change between upper and lower readings on the North
Thompson Creek is typical of past differences. The discharges from the #1,
#2, and #3 mines all contribute to the lower quality below the mine.
' The discharge from the #1 t4ine has been discontinued and discharge from the
#3 t4ine has been reduced. The reduction in mine discharge is expected to improve
the quality of the lower readings compared to the upper readings on tiorth Thompson
' Creek. The Abandoned Mines section of Colorado Mine Land Reclamation has continued
to service and upgrade treatment of the #2 Mine discharge during 1986. Whether
any improvement can be made in this discharge has yet to be shown.
' SURFACE WATER QUALITY
' Appendix III would normally have flow information from North and Middle Thompson
Creek. When time came to install the flumes, permanent cessation was being
planned and 3 of the 4 flumes had been partially washed out during high flow.
The decision was made to not repair the flumes or install the gages. The four
' flumes were removed in September 1986 as part of the reclamation work.
1

1
