UNITED STATES
DEPARTMENT OF
AGRICULTURE
July 15, 1994
Mr. Phil Vasquez
2172 Sumac Street
Longmont, Colorado
~~I II~II~II~~~~~~I~
~_....__ sss _....
Service
80501
RE: Lucio Vasquez Quarry Sites
Stone Canyon Road

9595 Nelson Road #D
Longmont, CO. 80501
Phone: 776-4034
Fax: 684-9893
The soils found on the two (2) sites that we visited with your
brother Lucio consist of Pinata-Rock. This soil type has a very
thin layer of top soil (0-3 inches) and a subsoil depth of up to
9 inches. These are underlain by sandstone materials. Soil
permeability is slow and available water in the soil profile is
moderate. The vegetation found on the sites is typical for the
area consisting of Ponderosa Pines, Currant Bush, Rabbit Brush
and various scattered grasses.
Reclamation on these sites is difficult due the lack of adequate
soils for vegetation establishment. In those areas were there is
adequate amounts of soil, the following grass mixture should be
seeded: Redondo Arizona fescue 2.0 #pls/ac.
Arriba Western Wheatgrass 12.0 #PLS/ac.
Vaughn Side Oats Grama 4.0 #PLS/ac.
Covington Blue Grama 1.5 #PLS/ac.
The seedbed should be smoothed and shaped prior to seeding. All
runoff from adjacent areas should be diverted away from any
slopes. The seed can be broadcast anytime from Nov. 1st to April
15th. On those areas that are reseeded, I would recommend
applying approximately 4,000 lbs. of good, clean straw mulch
after seeding is completed.
On those areas where the soils are not sufficient for seeding,
consideration should be given to controlling erosion from excess
runoff. Depending on the final size of the quarry, either
containing or providing for the safe and non-erosive exit of
runoff should be included in your reclamation plan.
I can not see any major problems with the type of operation you
are using at the present time. If you need additional information
or assistance, please feel free to call.
S ncerely,
N rman J ells, Jr.
District Conservationist
