~"~~•~ UnOea States
.` ~ ~~ Department of
\~~j AgricuRure
Soil
Conservation
Service
2 Colorado
G son, CO 81230
covering of seed by dragging an English (or similar) harrow over
the area would provide more optimum conditions for proper seed
germination. Under no conditions should seed be deeper than one-
half (2) inch below the soil surface.
7) Upon completion of seedbed preparation and seeding,~th2 seeder)
area should be covered with straw or similar( mulch material~at
the rate of approximately two tons per acre. Feedlot or`barnyard
manure may also be used as a mulch over the new seeding, applied
at a minimum rate of approximately 20 tons per acre and spread
uniformly over the area. The mulch will provide a more humid
environment for seedling establishment, will help catch and con-
serve soil moisture, permit warmer soil temperatures, and help
protect newly germinated seedlings from wind and water erosive
action. "Hydro-mulchers" and "Hydro-seeders" are commercially
available which combine and simplify the mulching process. Con-
tact the local SCS office for information regarding these methods.
8) Once so mulched, the mulch material should be stabilized and anchored
by means of synthetic or jute netting, or other suitable means of
holding the mulch material in place over the seeded area for at
least the first full growing season. Such netting is commercially
available at several location; the local SCS staff can supply this
information upon request.
9) The reseeded area should be deferred from all livestock grazing for
at least until the end of the second full growing season, or until
a relatively good stand is established (possibly 3-4 years). Fer-
tilizer application during the first few growing seasons, based
preferably upon soil test findings, should be considered to pro-
vide for optimum growth conditions.
10) In addition to the above recommendations, also refer to the attached
Colorado Standards and Specifications for additional information and
guidelines, which include:
a.) No. 544-"Land Reconstruction, Currently Mined Land"
b.) No. 484-"Mulching"
c.) No. 340-"Cover and Green Manure Crap"
d.) Job Sheet-"Mulching for Erosion Control on Newly Shaped Slopes"
Proper care, maintenance and management after seedling establishment is
equally or perhaps more important in many cases than the actual seeding. If
properly seeded and cared for, an excellent stand of grasses, legumes and/or
shrubs should result by the end of 2-3 growing seasons. Please give me a call
or drop by if you have any questions or desire further information. If we can
help when seeding takes place, please contact us.
Sincerely,
/7.tc ~t.~..,
O ina Soil Conservation Service
U is an age nCy of the
D eparlment of Apric uiture
Ken Lair
District Conservationist
Gunnison SCS
