IM REPLY REFER r0:
iiiiiiiiiiiiiiuiii
999
United States Department of the Interior
GEOLOGICAL SURVEY
BOX 25046 M.S. _~5,_
DENVER FEDERAL CEN7ER
DENVER, COLORADO 80225
Water Resources Division
Colorado District
October 10, 1991
Mr. James A. I am sending this
letter to you because previous letters on this matter have been sent from
representatives of Peabody Coal Company through you. Please advise the
appropriate representatives Erom Peabody Coal Company that the USGS has
completed the commitment to abandon wells and restore sites to conditions
previously agreed upon. Accordingly, we request that the USGS be released from
Further responsibility related to monitoring wells at Semi Mine.
Specific actions are as Follows: ~r
1. Wells SSU287, SSD487, SZL287, SZI287, SZW287, and SZU287 have been
abandoned using State of Colorado guidelines. A stake has been placed
at the location of each abandoned well site. The Baski flowing well
caps have been left at all the remaining flowing well sites. Each
well was pressurized and each flowing well cap was tested on October
1st and 2nd, 1991. All wells and caps were in good operating order at
that time. I recommend that someone from Seneca Mine recheck the
wells before December to ensure the wells are still properly
pressurized for winter.
2. The soil moisture access tubes have been removed.
3. The climate station and precipitation gages have been removed.
4. The western weir at the Cow Camp Creek site was removed.
5. Recorders and recorder houses have been removed from the wells
completed in reclaimed spoil
6. Recorders have been removed from the Cow Camp Creek and Spring Creek
springs. The recorder houses, staff gages, weirs, and associated
structures have been left as requested by Peabody Coal Company
representatives.
7. A11 construction and other miscellaneous materials have been removed
Erom the sites unless otherwise requested. For example, barrels used
to protect the wells at Bond Creek and fence posts used to support
nitrogen tanks are still in place.
M310-A
