<br />APPENDIX A <br />FIELD INVESTIGATION <br /> <br />Geotechnical mapping of the site was performed during <br />the Phase 1 geotechnical study of this investigation. Re- <br />sults of this mapping have been presented in our report <br />titled "Geotechnical Review, Orchard Valley Coal Mine, Paonia, <br />Colorado, for Colorado Westmoreland, Inc." <br />The subsurface conditions at the site were investigated <br />by drilling, logging, and sampling a total of seven borings <br />and by excavating, logging, and sampling a total of eight <br />test pits. <br />Borings were located in the following positions: <br />o One near the crest of the crushing and screening <br />level fill <br />o Two at the back of the fan level fill <br />o Two immediately downslope of the toe of the crush- <br />ing and screening level fill <br />o One downslope of a potential waste rock disposal <br />site <br />o One in the alluvium downstream of the lowest set- <br />tlin~ pond (Pond 4) <br />Test pits were located as follows: <br />• <br />o Five caithin the fills which have been constructed <br />to form the fan, portal, office and warehouse, and <br />A-1 <br />GEONYDFO CONSULfING.INC. <br />
