TRAPPER MINING INC.
iii iiiiiiiiiiiu iii
July 25, 2001
CERTIFIED it7099 3220 0003 0831 3822
RECEIVED
JUL 3~ 2001
Ms. Carla Lenkey
Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment Division of Minerals 8 Geolo9Y
W QCD-PE-B2
4300 Cherry Creek Dr. South
Denver, CO 80222-1530
Subject: Secoud Quarter 2001 Colorado Wastewater Discharge Monitoriug Reports,,
Permit No. CO-0032115
Dear Ms. Lenkey:
Enclosed are Trapper Mine's Second Quarter 2001 Colorado Wastewater Discharge Monitoring Reports for the
period 04/01/01 - 06/30/01. During this quarter, four NPDES outfalls were active. Outfalls 001 and 002 discharged
routinely throughout the quarter. Outfall 011 discharged sporadically throughout the quarter in response to snowmelt
and precipitation events. And outfall 017 discharged briefly in April in response to snowmelt mnoff. Outfalls 003,
005, 006, 008, 009, 010, 012, 013, 014, 015, 016, 018, 019, 020, 021, and 023 did not discltazge during the quarter.
Outfalls 022 and 024 are associated with sediment ponds that have not yet been constructed. No discharges are
reported for these outfalls. Values reported on rite enclosed DMRs represent the maximum (or minimum as
applicable) monthly/daily values generated at each outfall during the quarter.
Also enclosed are montlily NOAA weather summaries for the reporting period, seep volume data for site O] 1, and
WET test report fom>s as applicable. Two outfalls were sampled for WET analyses during the quarter. Two species
acute tests were completed at outfalls 001 and O] I during the second quarter. A single species acute test (P.
promelas) was completed at outfa11002 during the first quarter. Results for the outfall 002 WET are formally
reported with this quarter's DMR submittal as the applicable reporting period for this test at this outfall continues
through June. No exceedences of WET test limitations were observed at any tested outfalls during the applicable
reporting periods.
One exceedence of a primary etlluent limitation occurred during the quarter, however, the alternate liritation was
applicable in this case as the exceedence was attributable to runoff stemming from a precipitation/snowmelt event
and the sediment ponds discharging to the ouH'all were being properly maintained and operated. At outfall 011, the
primary thirty-day average limitations for TSS was exceeded by a sample collected at 1:25 p.tn on 04/03/01 (40
mg/1). The alternate daily maximum limitation for settleable solids, applicable in the event of discharge caused by
precipitation (or snowmelt) less than or equal to the 10-yeaz, 24-hour precipitation event, was met.
As noted on the enclosed monthly NOAA weather summary for April, precipitation in the amount of 0.09" was
recorded on 04/02/01. During this time period, snowmelt was noted to be occurring as well. Daily precipitation
measurements are recorded at 7:30 a.m The sample from outfall 011 was collected at 1:25 p.m. on 04/03/01. This
infomration demonstrates this discharge was sampled within 48 hours of measurable precipitation.
Trapper is required to maintain sediment levels in ponds at or below 60% of the pond volume. The ponds
contributing to outfall 011 all contained scdiment levels well below this limit at the time the exceedence occurred.
The exceedence occurred solely in response to a discharge caused by precipitation and/or snowmelt therefore, the
P.O.
