-:
~~
INSPECTION REPORT
Site: National King Coal Mine, Hesperus, Colorado
Inspected By: Don R. May, P.E., Project Engineer
Inspection Date: March 26, 1993
March 30, 1993
Coal Waste Pile: The coal waste pile and the surrounding azea were inspected for compliance
with the state approved design and for signs of instability and erosion. The waste pile
remains in basically the same condition as it was during the last inspection with no visible
problem areas.
No new work has been performed on the pile or the drainage system since the December
inspection. Jim Delusio, yazd foreman, said that work will begin soon. Photographs ~1 and
~Y2. show the drainage ditch on the north hillside of the eastside valley which will be used to
divert uncontaminated upstream flow around the waste pile. The ditch was roughed in last
fall and will be cleaned and riprapped this spring. As seen in the photos the banks, in places,
have sloughed and debris has fallen into the ditch. Portions of the ditch, photo k3, are more
stable.
As reported in the December inspection, a small amount of mine waste was stockpiled
adjacent to the road approximately at the location where the bottom the fill will be as shown
in the reclamation design, see photo ~i3. This material will need to be removed prior to
construction of the tce drain and waste pile intercept ditch.
Sediment Ponds: The waste ponds were inspected for sedimentation and erosion. As seen in
photo #5 the west pond has standing water in it from snow melt. The ponds are in good -
wndition. The elevation of the low level outlet on the west pond may need to be adjusted
based upon the results of the survey performed by Harry Ranney in October.
