III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
999
STATE OF COLORADO
DIVISION OF MINERALS AND GEOLOGY
Deparlmenr of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman Si., Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
Phone: 13031 866 356 7
FAX: (303)832-8106
DATE: December 5, 1994
TO: Barbara Pavlik
FROM: Erica Crosby ~~
RE: Roadside Portals (C-81-041)
Hydrology Review of the Roadside North Portal
II~~~
DEPARTMENT OF
NATURAL
RESOURCE
Roy Romcr
Governor
lames S Lochhead
Execwrve Director
rn¢hael B Long
Drvuion Dueuor
Barb, as mentioned in our last team meeting (11/21/94), the
Roadside Portal Mines has started mining in the Roadside North
Portal Area (formerly known as the Cameo Mine). This particular
area of the mine has been in temporary cessation since 1982. In
searching through years of DMG files, it appears that there has
been very little review done at the North Portal in terms of ground
water information, mitigation of impacts to the hydrologic balance,
protection of the hydrologic balance and alluvial valley floors.
Most of the concentration on these issues have been at the Roadside
South Portal.
The area has been approved in the 5-year permit and projected life
of the operation. Very little is discussed in the permit and the
Division's Finding's Document in terms of ground water impacts and
alluvial valley floor issues. In 1995, the projected mining is to
occur under two creeks; Coal Creek and Jerry Creek.
Since they are currently mining in this area, it is imperative that
we review the above mentioned issues as soon as possible. In our
team meeting, it was discussed that you will look at these items as
soon as the Findings documents are completed for the Eastside and
Meeker Area Mines. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks.
c:\roadside\941205
