Sections 16 and 17 (T5N, R86W). Two observation points were
selected which provided a wide vista in the northern portion
and in the southern portion of the study area. In the
northern sector, the observation point was located in
Section 33 (T6N, R86W) near the 6952 ft. bench mark above a
large stock pond with a view of ponds in Section 34 and
Section 4 (T5N, R86W) plus large expanses of fallow fields
and sagebrush-grass vegetation. In the southern sector, the
observation point was located in Section 16 (T5N, R86W) near
the 6803 ft. bench mark. A double stock pond in Section 17,
broad expanses of fallow field and sagebrush-grass, and all
of the Fish Creek basin in Section 16, plus the drilling
rig, were seen from. this point. Since development activity
was concentrated in the southern section, this area received
the most attention.
When cranes were visually or auditorially spotted, their
number, location, and time of sighting were recorded. When
the cranes stayed in. view, the duration of feeding, loafing,
and preening behaviors were recorded, as well as their
movement in the immediate area. A pre-drilling behavioral
and location study was conducted from 9-13 August and a
during drilling study from 17-21 August. Additional
observations were made on 21-22 September, and pre-seismic
and during-seismic testing observations were completed on 6-
8 October. Most observations and records were from sunrise
through 1200 hrs. Thunderstorm activity prevented
consistent records from 1600 to sunset.
7
