Haulroads are constructed during the summer months when practicable. For this reason, temporary
erosion controls during the construction of haulroads are usually not required except where
construction occurs in the bottom of a drainage. In cases such as this, sedimentation pontls would be
the primary comrol of suspended solids. Diversion ditches are also used when necessary.
Topsoil is not replaced on either embankment or cut sideslopes. Many haulroads are in existence for a
short period of time. Often by the time the slope could be topsoiled and stabilized with vegetation, the
haulroad is abandoned and the area must be reclaimed. Moreover, topsoil placed on a cut or fill must
eventually be salvaged again before the road is reclaimed and then replaced again. Each time topsoil
must be handfed, a certain amount of loss and contamination occurs. Instead of trying to topsoil and
revegetate side slopes to provide stabilization, ditches, berms and diversions are used at the Trapper
Mine to minimize runoff on the slopes. In addition, the untopsoiled slopes may be seeded to adapted
grasses.
The construction practices for haulroads at the Trapper Mine are cert'rfied by a registered professional
engineer. Occasionaly, mod'rfication to these spec'rfications is necessary for site spec'rfic sRuations
where akernate engineering practices are more practicable. However, any mod'rfications to these
spec'rfications is never such that the structural integrity of the road is affected, nor is any mod'rfication in
conflict with applicable Division regulations. Cert'rfication of existing haulroads are contained in
• Append'or S.
The design and construction crfteria are appropriate for the anticipated volume, weigh and speed of
the haulage vehicles.
3.7.2.3 Drainage.
Haulroads at the Trapper Mine are designed, constructed and maintained in a manner consistent with
our reclamation program to provide adequate drainage and safey pass the runoff from aten-year,
24-hour runoff event with up to
•
PR-3
3-166
;`.~.~~,
2-II -93
