Montrose is situated in the Uncompahgre Valley with the 14,000
foot San Juan mountains to the south, the 10,000 foot Uncompahgre
Plateau to the west, Grand Mesa to the north and the Black Canyon
National Park to the east. These surrounding high mountain barriers
afford the valley uniformity of weather and lower wind velocity
than other portions of Colorado. Most winds occur during the months
of April and early May. Both summers and winters are mild and there
is minimal snow accumulation in the area of the city. The semi-arid
environment maintains a low relative humidity, low average
precipitation, and a clear and pure air quality year round.
* Elevation - 5,749 feet above sea level
* Prevailing wind - Southwest
* Average growing season (number of days between killing
frosts) - 150 days May through October
* Average 227 to 274 days of sunshine each year
* Annual Precipitation - 9.5"
* Mean Snowfall - 25.0"
* Average Temperature - 63.6 degrees maximum, 34.2 degrees
minimum and average monthly - 48.9 degrees
