•
significant numbers of people in and out of Boulder. This
route passes through a "gateway" that provides a positive
scenic transition from non-urban to urban land use. The
site is visible from the top of Davidson Mesa and again for
30 - 35 seconds as the road levels at the bottom of the mesa.
Other visual elements at that point, such as the mountain
backdrop, the city itself, and traffic conditions at the
interchange, lessen the visual impact of the study area.
Traffic leaving Boulder has a broader view of the site until
it passes South Boulder Creek. The area with high visual
sensitivity is adjacent to U.S. Highway 36, the overpass on
Table Mesa Drive, and the residences adjacent to the study
area. However, the area with high scenic or visual quality
• in this vicinity is South Boulder Creek and adjacent riparian
vegetation, which supports the greatest diversity of wildlife
habitats , and which, of course, is not part of the proposed
mine site.
The site is also visible as one approaches Boulder from the
south on South Foothills Highway (Colo. 93) . However,
northbound traffic has only a brief glimpse of the site;
southbound traffic has none.
• Housing west and to the north (Tantra) is screened from it
by a recently constructed berm. Farther south the Hy View
subdivision has an open view of the site and of the existing
gravel operation.
A-10
