Beneath <br /> the valley fill material lies bedrock of Pierre Shale. <br /> Niwot soils are not classified as prime farmland by the Soil <br /> Conservation Service. The other soil type, Loveland, occupies <br /> 18 acres on site and can be classified as prime farmland <br /> if the land is irrigated with an adequate water supply. <br /> Vegetation <br /> Man's activities along South Boulder Creek for the last 150 <br /> years have substantially changed the original plant <br /> communities . In the lightly grazed pastures, original <br /> vegetation patterns can still be seen. Sedges and tall <br /> grasses constitute the bulk of the plant cover in these <br /> areas. In heavily grazed pastures , native prairie species <br /> have been replaced by European pasture grasses (orchard grass , <br /> • timothy and red top) .
