• Parameter Selection -Phase II
Overburden parameters for the second phase sampling were selected after reviewing the Phase I
data. Constituents which approached or exceeded marginally suitable to unsuitable guideline levels
during Phase I sampling were included on the Phase II analyses list. Those constituents which were
below detection limits were naturally omitted from the Phase II analyses list.
Phase I overburden sampling and analyses results for the New Horizon 2 study area were presented
to the Division on June 22, 1987 (meeting, G. Wendt and S. Renner). A letter of agreement for the
Phase II monitoring plan was subsequently submitted to the Division on July 6, 1987 (letter, G.
Wendt to P. O'Connor) and approved by the Division on August 4, 1987 (letter P. O'Connor to J.
Lunan).
Laboratory parameters included paste pH, ammonium nitrogen, sodium adsorption ratio, and Acid
base potential. Phase II SAR analyses were confined to Sites 881 E and 882E since elevated SAR
values were identified only at Site 872E during Phase I drilling.
• Analytical Procedures - Phase I and Phase II
At the lab (InterMountain Lab, Farmington, New Mexico), chip samples and cores were air dried, split,
and composited according to lithologic and stratigraphic sequence, crushed to pass a 10 mesh sieve,
and bagged for storage. Prior to splitting and crushing intact cores, foreign material attached to the
outside of the core was removed. Overburden chip samples from Phase I Site 871 E were collected
from 2-foot vertical increments. Adjacent 2-foot chip samples of similar strata were composited into
4- and 6-foot vertical increments prior to laboratory analysis. Phase II overburden chip samples were
composited by similar strata while geologic descriptions were prepared during field sampling. All
samples from the three Phase I cores and three Phase II combination core/bore holes were
chemically and physically analyzed at InterMountain Laboratory using the procedures listed in Table
2.04.8-2. The parameter and procedure list was developed by Peabody's soil scientist (Gary Wendt)
in consultation with the Division's reclamation specialists (Peter O'Connor and Steve Renner).
Extensive reference was made to the Division's 1982 Water Quality and Overburden Geochemistry
Guideline.
• Revised 9/99 2.04.6-19
