• <br />u <br />A lithium-based drill stem joint lubricant was used at all 1987 sample sites. Holes were drilled <br />primarily with air until circulation was lost. Water injections were occasionally utilized to restore <br />circulation at Sites 881 E and 886E. <br />The core drilling and sampling methods were identical to those previously described for Phase I. <br />Overburden cuttings (chip samples) were collected exclusively with air from the combination <br />bore/core holes. The vertical sampling increment for cuttings samples was adjusted at each <br />individual location in response to the encountered geologic strata. Chip samples were collected from <br />the soil surface to the depth at which cutting circulation was hampered or lost for a particular hole. <br />Subsequently, once ground water was encountered, core samples were collected. A geophysical log <br />which included density, resistivity, and natural gamma was also completed for each hole. Once all <br />chip samples and cores were drilled, sampled, described, and boxed, they were shipped by truck to <br />InterMountain Lab in Farmington, New Mexico. <br />Parameter Selection -Phase I <br />The Phase 1 analyses list for New Horizon 2 was developed after an extensive review of recent <br />literature, the Division's overburden sampling guidelines (CDMG, 1982), consultation with Division <br />personnel, and previous sampling conducted at the New Horizon 1 mine area. The OIU monitoring <br />plan was submitted to the Division for approval on February 20, 1987 (letter, G. Wendt to <br />P.O'Connor). A letter of agreement on the proposed OIU baseline study for New Horizon 2 was <br />received from the Division on April 24, 1987 (letter, P. O'Connor to J.Lunan). <br />The following chemical and physical parameters were proposed to be determined for the Phase I <br />evaluation of OIU material in the New Horizon 2 study area: <br />Paste pH <br />Paste Conductivity (EC) in mmhos/cm at 25°C <br />Saturation Percentage (SP) <br />Particle Size (percent sand, silt, and clay) <br />Water Soluble Cations Calcium (Ca), Magnesium (Mg), and Sodium (Na) <br />Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR) <br />Revised 9/99 <br />2.04.6-12 <br />
