RJA-LWH-ACT <br />04/2001 <br />ILDEFONSO SERIES <br />The Ildefonso series consists of very deep, well drained, moderately rapidly permeable soils that formed in <br />alluvium, colluvium and eolian sediments derived from quartzite, granite, basalt, gneiss, schist and limestone. <br />Ildefonso soils are on mesas, fan terraces and hills. Slopes aze 0 to 75 percent. The mean annual precipitation is I 1 <br />inches and the mean annual temperature is 50 degrees F. <br />TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy-skeletal, mixed, superactive, mesic Ustic Haplocalcids <br />TYPICAL PEDON: Ildefonso fine sandy loam--rangeland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.) <br />A--O to 3 inches; light yellowish brown (lOYR 6/4) fine sandy loam, brown (lOYR 4/3) moist; weak fine gaanulaz <br />structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; many very fine and few fine roots; 10 percent pebbles; <br />slightly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.2); clear smooth boundary. (2 to 6 inches thick) <br />Bw--3 to 9 inches; brown (7.SYR 5/3) fine sandy loam, dark brown (7.SYR 4/3) moist; weak medium subangulaz <br />blocky structure parting to weak fine granular; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; many very fine and <br />few fine roots; l0 percent pebbles; slightly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.2); gradual smooth boundary. <br />(6 to 10 inches thick) <br />Bkl--9 to 13 inches; light brown (7.SYR 6/4) gravelly fine sandy loam, brown (7.SYR 5/4) moist; massive; <br />slightly hard, very friable, nonsticky and slightly plastic; many fine roots; 20 percent pebbles; strongly effervescent <br />with visible calcium carbonate occurring as concretions, as thin seams and streaks, and as coatings on pebbles; <br />moderately alkaline (pH 8.4); clear smooth boundary. (4 to 20 inches thick) <br />Bk2--13 to 70 inches; pink (7.SYR 7/3) very gravelly fine sandy loam, light brown (7.SYR 6/3) moist; massive; <br />hazd, friable, nonsticky and slightly plastic; common fine and medium roots; weakly cemented in some parts; 40 <br />percent pebbles and cobbles; violently effervescent with visible calcium cazbonate occurring in finely divided <br />forms, as concretions and as coatings; moderately alkaline (pH 8.4). <br />TYPE LOCATION: Torrance County, New Mexico; about 5 miles SW of Estancia; NE1/4NE1/4 Sec. 33, <br />T.6N., R.8E.; 106 degrees, OS minutes, 54 seconds west longitude; 34 degrees, 42 minutes, 32 seconds north <br />latitude. <br />RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: <br />Soil Temperature: 47 to 59 degrees F. <br />Soil Moisture: SMCS is moist in some part at least 25 percent of the time the soil temperature exceeds 41 degrees <br />F.
