LEONE SAfvD ARID GRAVEL CO. , OPERATOR
AHD idR. BURKE, O~1NER
SECTION V RECLAMATION REC064+fENDATIONS
The mined area is a mesa top with gravel break side slopes. The disturbed
area will be restored to native vegetation and wildlife habitat. Mined
areas should be planned to minimize impacts and to restore land as soon
as possible.
Enough top-soil should be stockpiled in order to backfill any disturbed
area with a minimum of at least six inches of top-soil. Refer to letter
dated October 12, 1979, from Lee Neve, Soil Scientist, on location and
amounts of top-soil available from Rim (KnC) and Ildefonso Complex (XC~E)
soil mapping units.
Any reclaimed area shoul3 be graded to a slope flat enough to establish
permanent vegetative cover. A minimum of a 3:1 slope is desirable and
gentler slopes would be even more beneficial.
In preparing the seedbed prior to planting, the top-soil should be firm
and weed-free. Grass seed should be drilled across slope to a depth of
one:'half ('/Z) inch. It would be beneficial to drill with a grass drill
equipped with depth bands and packer wheels.
The mined area will be reseeded by drilling a range mixture of eight (8)
pounds PLS/Ac. of Barton or Arriba western wheatgrass and four and a half
(4.5) pounds PLS/Ac. of Vaughn or E1 Reno side-oats grams.
Mulching of all seeded areas is recommended and will greatly enhance the
chances of obtaining a stand of grass. If a straw or hay mulch is used,
a minimum of 4,000 lbs. per acre of air dry mulch should. be used. The
mulch should be incorporated into the soil surface after the seeding oper-
ation is completed with a crimper, sheep's foot or disc.
Any seeding should be done in the early spring or late fall depending
upon available soil moisture.
Since the mining area is located in a lcw precipitation zone and there
won't be any supplemental water used, fertilizer application is not
recommended.
All seeded areas should be protected from grazing and traffic for a
minimum of two {2) full growing seasons following treatment or until
stand establishment.
