UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE
SOIL CONSERVATION SERVICE
422 East First St., Trinidad, CO 81082 10/12/79
Leone Sand and Travel Co.
509 Ash
Trinidad, CO 81082
Gentlemen:
- Attached are soil descriptions and soil maps of the mine site -
from which you plan to excavate sand and gravel.
The sand and gravel occurs at the surface on hill tops intermixed
with shale bedrock. Gravel layers are from 0 to 20 feet thick in
this area. The soil map unit is (XCjE) Ildefonso complex; 55 per-
cent louviers shaly loam on steep side slopes, 35 percent Ildefonso
gravelly loam on gravel capped hill tops, and 10 percent Kim loam
on hill crests. Hill tops are a good source for sand and gravel.
This site is being considered for pond excavation. This is not
feasible due to seepage. This unit is a poor source for topsoil.
The soil map unit (KmC) Kim loam, 1 to 9 percent slopes is rated
good for topsoil. The A horizon is 3 to 7 inches thich with the
underlying material having similar characteristics. All parts of
the profile are rated good as a source for topsoil.
Respectfully,
Lee A. Neve
Soil Scientist
cc: Mr. Burke
0
