~II ~I~~I~~I~~~~~ ~I~
sss
UNITED STATES Soil 'Lase McClelland Dr. #3100
DEPARTMENT OF Conservation Fort Collins, Colorado 80525
AGRICULTURE Service Phone (303) 223-0960
November 14, 1994
Doyle Russell
c/o Gladys Russell
Dear Ms Russell:
The following information should address your questions in regards to your
mine site.
Vegetation Type
The site of the mine is part of the shortgrass prairie which consists of
80-909s grasses, 5-10% forbs and 2-10% shrubs. The dominant species in the
potential plant community are Blue grams, Western wheatgrass and Green
needlegrass.
Climate
Precipitation averages around 13" annually with wide fluctuations from year
to year. 60 -75% of precipitation is received between May and October.
Soils
Refer to soils map and soil descriptions.
Reclamation
Any existing topsoil should be stockpiled. This stockpile should be
protected from wind and water erosion. A good method of protection is to
seed the stockpile with a permanent cover.
Reclamation will require grading and reshaping the area. Any steep faces
need to be blended into a gradual slope (3:1 or better) prior to seeding.
Reclamation should begin as quickly as possible after mining activities in
the area cease.
Refer to seeding recommendation for seeding specifics. Mulching will have
to accompany reseeding to limit any erosion from rain or wind.
The area will need to be closed to grazing for 2-3 years after seeding to
allow for seedling development.
Sincerely,
~`` .Q.I~L1~-~
John Fusaro
Range Conservationist
