~ outside of the revised area of tin~artwk;nq (Figure 4). Inventory
• coverage in the initial area of undertaking should be considered
inoonplete until test excavations are conducted. If the area of
urrlertaking is revised -again and development plans were to threaten these
potential resources, there the test excavation should certainly be
undertaken.
A natural exposure of silicate toolstone was noted in the inventory.
It is not believed to be significant as a resource and is well outside
the revised area of undertaking.
The 1986 inventory of the initial area of undertaking further
confirmed the prehistoric occupational patterns indicated in the 1984
(Baker 1984) baseline inventory for Colorado Westmoreland. This
indicates that there is a clustering of prehistoric occupational remains
about the mouths of the canyons of the small tributaries of the North
Fork of the Gunnison. These correlate with a natural ecotone where the
streams issue from the high bluffs onto the upper benches and terraces of
the larger valley. The study further confirmed that aboriginal sites are
still rather scarce in the high bluffs overlooking the North Fork. It is
reocmRpnded that the Bureau of Land Management and other concerned
agerlcies hereafter treat these azeas as potentially sensitive
archaeological zones in making decisions regarding lands in this region.
Dccept for the stipulations reanrtended herein, the initial and
revised areas of undertaking for the Orchard Valley Mine's west portal
• area in fast Foatcap Creek (Figure 4) should be considered free of
cultural resources so long as the impact areas delineated herein are
adhered to. In the event the project plans change or that undetected
cultural resources are exposed during construction activity, Colorado
Westmoreland should cease construction activity and notify the SIM and
their archaeological consultant.
•
al
