• Silt Content: 5 to 50 percent. <br />Sand Content: 40 to 90 percent with more than 25 percent fine sand or coarser. <br />A and Chorizons - <br />Hue: 2.5Y through 7.5YR <br />Value: 5 to 7 dry, 3 to 5 moist Chroma: 2 to 4 <br />COMPETING SERIES: These are the Gladel, Lazear, Redspear, Rizno, Rizozo, Skyvillage, and Travson series. <br />Gladel soils have continuous genetic subhorizons ofsecendarycalciumcarbonate and/orsulfate. Lazearsoils have <br />more than 18 percent clay. Redspear, Rizrio and Rizozo soils have hues of SYR or redder. Skyvillage soils are dry <br />in all parts of the soil moisture control section periodically from February 15 to June 30. Travson soils are dry in the <br />soil moisture control section July through September. <br />GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The Travessilla soils are on hills, cuestas, and mesas with slopes ranging from 0 to 75 <br />percent. Elevation ranges from about 4,700 to 8,000 feet. They formed from calcareous eolian sediments and <br />material weathered from sandstone and shale. Outcrops of sandstone with a minor amount of shale are common <br />on steep slopes. Typically, the average annual precipitation ranges from about 10 to 13 inches, but has ranged <br />higher in the past. The average annual temperature ranges from about 47 to 57 degrees F. Frost-free period is <br />typically 115 to 170 days. Utah has afrost-free period as low as 70 days. <br />• GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Bemal, Camero, Hagerman, Quay and Pajarito soils. <br />Bemal and Hagerman soils have argillic horizons. Camero soils lack bedrock at depths of less than 20 inches. Quay <br />and Pajarito soils lack bedrock within a depth of 40 inches and Quay soils have more than 18 percent Gay in the <br />control section and have a prominent zone of lime accumulation. <br />DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILR'Y: Well drained; medium to rapid runoff; moderate or moderately rapid <br />permeability. <br />USEAND VEGETATION: Rangeland. Juniper, squawbush, oakbrush, blue grams, sideoats grams and snakeweed <br />are the principal plants. <br />DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Northern New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Montana, western Oklahoma, Utah and <br />Wyoming.
