• PINON SERIES <br />LOCATION PINON NM+UT <br />Established Series <br />RD: BDS/CDURJA <br />5/86 <br />The Pinon series consists of shallow, well drained, moderately slowly penneable soils that formed in alluvium and <br />residuum derived from limestone. These soils are on knolls, ridges, mesas and hillsiopes with slopes ranging from <br />1 to 30 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 13 inches; mean annual temperature is about 53 degrees F. <br />TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy, mixed, mesic Lithic Ustollic Calciorthids <br />TYPICAL PEDON: Pinon channery loam -rangeland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.) <br />A-0 to 7 inches; brown (7.5YR 5/3) channery loam, dark brown (7.5YR 4/3) moist; moderate very fine granular <br />strudure; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many fine and fine roots; about 4 percent limestone <br />fragments; strongly effervescent; disseminated calcium carbonate; moderately alkaline; dear smooth boundary. <br />(3 to 10 inches thick) <br />• Bk1-7 to 10 inches; light brown (7.SYR 6/3) channery loam, brown (7.5YR 5/3) moist; massive; slightly hard, very <br />friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; strongly effervescent with common large concretions, few thin seams and <br />streaks of calcium carbonate; moderately alkaline; dear smooth boundary. (2 to 4 inches thick) <br />Bk2-10 to 16 inches; pinkish white (7.5YR 8/2) channery loam, pinkish gray (7.SYR 6/2) moist; massive; slightly <br />hard, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; fewfine and medium roots; violentlyeffervescent with many soft <br />segregations of calcium carbonate; moderately alkaline; abrupt smooth boundary. (5 to 10 inches thick) <br />R-16 inches; fractured limestone with many lime coatings on rock fragments. <br />TYPE LOCATION: Torrance County, New Mexico; 2,340 feet east of the NW comer sec. 15, T. 2 N., R. 7 E. <br />RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: <br />Depth to bedrock: 10 to 20 inches <br />Rock fragments: 5 to 35 percent <br />Soil temperature: 52 to 57 degrees F. <br />Readion: mildly to moderately alkaline <br />A horizon: Hue - 7.5YR or 10YR <br />Value: 4 through 6 dry, 2 through 5 moist <br />• Chroma: 2 through 4 <br />(Revised March 2006) <br />Attachment 2.04.9-3-26 <br />
