JWW/MCS <br />10/94 <br />The Bowbac series consists of moderately deep, well drained soils formed in alluvium, eolian deposits or residuum <br />derived primarily from argillaceous sandstone. They occupy dissected fan remnants, fan piedmonts, hillslopes, <br />pediments, ridges and buttes. Slopes are 0 to 15 percent and both simple and complex. The mean annual <br />precipitation is about 13 inches, and the mean annual temperature is about 46 degrees F. <br />TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-loamy, maed, mesic Ustic Haplargids <br />TYPICAL PEDON: Bowbac sandy loam-on a northeast facing slope of 1 percent under native vegetation. (Colors <br />are for dry soil unless othervvise stated.) <br />A-0 to 3 inches; brown (10YR 5/3) sandy loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; weak fine and very fine granular <br />• structure; soft, very friable, nonstlcky nonelastic; many fine and very fine roots; neutral (pH 6.8); abrupt <br />wavy boundary. (2 to 7 inches thiG<) <br />Bt1-3 to 25 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) sandy Gay loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; moderate coarse and <br />medium prismatic structure parting to moderate medium and coarse angular blocky, hard, friable, slightly <br />sticky and plastic; common fine and very fine, few medium and coarse roots; many distinct Gay films on <br />faces of pads; neutral (pH 7.2); dear wavy boundary. (8 to 24 inches thick) <br />Bt2-25 to 31 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) sandy Gay loam, dark yellowish brown (10YR 414) moist; <br />moderate medium and coarse subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slighty <br />plastic; few medium fine and very fine roots; common distinct Gay films on faces of pads; mildly alkaline <br />(pH 7.6); Gear wavy boundary. (4 to 8 inches thicc) <br />• <br />Bk-31 to 39 inches; very pale brown (10YR 7/3) sandy loam, brown (10YR 5/3) moist; massive; soft, friable, <br />Blighty plastic; few medium, fine and very fine roots; slight effervescence, calcium carbonate as few fine <br />and medium soft masses; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); abrupt smooth boundary.
