Page 2
Robert Chiang
All pit sideslopes should be graded to 3:1 or flatter, At least
side of the pit area should be graded 6:1 to allow easy entrance
exit by cattle and wildlife. The stockpiled topsoil ahould be t
spread evenly over the surface of the mined area at a minimum de
12 inches.
one
and
th of
Slopes must be protected with diversions, furrows or pits to atop or at
least slow the rill erosion that will occur. Topsoiling operati ns are
especially susceptible to rill erosion and can be damaged if not properly
treated. Any of these treatments must be applied across the slo es.
For seed mix recommendation please see the attached form CO-ECS- The
seed should be drilled into a firm, weed free seedbed. If the s ed is
broadcast seeded the recommendations must be doubled in quantity.
The seed mix I put together is based on an end use after mining f range
and wildlife purposes. The western and slender wheatgrasses wou d provide
good forage for cattle. The indian ricegrass and blue grams gra ses
will provide good food and cover for wildlife. All species are dapted
and will survive well on the site once ea tablished.
Weed control may be necessary for the first one or two growing s axons.
2,4-D or Banval applied according to label directions ahould wor
acceptably.
The entire seeded area should be excluded from grazing for 2 fu years
after planting. This will require fencing the area off from sur oundin
range.
Surface waters should he diverted from the pit. Standing water 111
destroy the seeding. If an end use besides range is planned, t ese
recommendations can be altered accordingly.
For further assistance, please contact our office.
Cordially,
Ronald L.
