UNITED STATES • Natural Resources • 595 Nelson Road #D
DEPARTMENT OF Conservation Longmont, CO. 80501
AGRICULTURE Service Phone: 303-776-4034
Fax: 303-684-9893
Serving Adams, Boulder and Weld Counties
RECEIVED
Mr. Chester Barnard
P.o. Box s6 UCC 22 1996
Lyons, Colorado 80540
Diviaian.ot m~nera~s ti Geology
RE: Seeding Recommendation
Reseeding on the quarry sites in the area north of Lyons is
difficult at best. Soils are very thin and generally low in
organic matter. Most of the soils are classified as Pinata Rock
and are characteristically found in this transition zone between
the plains and foothills. These soils are a stony sandy loam.
Runoff is rapid and the erosion potential is high.
To reclaim and seed the site, I would recommend slopes be shaped
and graded to no more than 4:1 with flatter slopes (6:1) being
more desirable. Slopes should be protected from off site water
running across them by installing diversions, if needed. A soil
sample should be taken to determine fertilizer requirements but
no less than 40# of Nitrogen and 40# Phosphorous should be
applied. Fertilizer should be applied immediately prior to
seeding and lightly worked into the soil.
These sites are best adapted to native species of grass. The
following mix would be recommended for the site:
Covington Blue Grama 1.0#/ac. ~ 20~ _ .2#PLS/ac.
E1 Reno Side Oats Grama 4.5#/ac. ~ 30~ = 1.5#PLS/ac.
Rosanna Western Wheat 8.0#/aC. @ 30$ = 2.4#PLS/ac.
Lodorm Green Needlegrass 5.0#/ac. ~ 20Yr = 1.0#PLS/ac.
The mix could be supplemented with Mountain Mahogany or Four
winged Saltbush. All seed should be of high quality and have a
current certification date (within the last twelve months). If
the seed is broadcast or a hydro-mulcher used, the above rates
should be doubled.
After seeding is completed, the area should be mulched with
approximately 4,000# per acre of native hay or clean, bright,
weed free straw. The mulch should be spread uniformly and
'crimped' into the soil. The exception would be with hydro-
seeding where mulching is not be needed.
All weeds should be controlled to allow the grass a chance to
become established. Care should be exercised, especially in the
use of chemicals. Manufacturers' labeling should be strictly
adhered to and chemicals applied only by qualified applicators.
