The plan No. 1 appears to be the best plan for all of the
wildlife species involved. The loss of the river habitat for the
fish will reduce the population of fish. How significant this
loss will be is hard to assess until the change occurs. 'L'he
development of four lakes would be more beneficial for wildlife,
because of the greater amount of edge that will be developed.
Also with four lakes the management of fish would be easier than
it would be in one large lake. In reviewing the plans I will
have to recommend that plan No. 1 is the best for wildlife.
The plant species chosen for reclamation tend to favor all of the
species of wildlife that will return to the area once mining has
been completed. In some areas a slope of 4 to 1 or even 5 to 1
would help emergent vegetation develop more rapidly, and thus
fish and waterfowl would benefit sooner than with 3 to 1 slopes.
I realize that 3 to 1 is all that is required but shallower slopes
have less erosion and plants develop sooner.
The Colorado Division of Wildlife appreciates the opportunity to
comment on this project in Mesa County near the town of Whitewater.
Thy occurance of wildlife is minimal aL Ulc l~rc:a<~nl_, lnil wLr•n n•r•I,I-
mation is completed the area should be very beneficial for many wild-
life species.
Sincerely, ,
~~
•!t / •4 nl l 4 ~~~ y3 ~
Thomas K.
