Theee applications
can be made using the fertilizer schedule as a guideline. Nitrogen should not be applied at a.
higher rate than 1.0 lb per 1000 square feet if using :~ quick release fetillzer (water
soluble nitrogen). Higher rates of nitrogen and fewer applications can be made if a Blow
release (water insoluble nltrogen) source ie used. Turf yrade fertilizers are generally
complete fertilizers, whether dry or liquid, that contain percentages of nitrogen, phosphate,
and potash. Theee fertilizers will normally have grades of 2-1-1, 3-1-2, or 4-1-2.
To determine the amount of fertilizer to apply based on tl~e Boll recommendation you will
need to know the grade or guaranteed analysis and for liquids the weight per yallon.
For example, the product hoe a guaranteed analysis of 30-10-10 which ie a 3-1-1 ratio. The
soil analysis recommended 3.0 pounds nitrogen, 1.0 pound phosphate and 1.0 pound potash per
1000 square feet per season.
This would be split into separate applications. If the fertilizer weiyhs 50 lbs., there Se
15 lbs. N, 5 Lbe. P205, 5 lbs. K20 in the product (50 x .3, 50 x .1). The rate to apply
booed on the Boil recommendations would be approximately 208 of the fertilizer
per season (per 1000 aq ft). The spreader elluuld be calLbrated prior to the application
eo the proper rate is applied. It ie important to remember to make the application in
right angles to one another for uniform coverage. If this method of application is made,
the applicator should be calibrated at 1/2 the rate. ,....
The alkaline soil pH ie too high for optimum grass production. Some problems may occur with
chloroeie to cool season grasses. Correct with the application of sulfur or gypsum.
The sodium ie high and will need to be corrected to improve grass production.
Sulfur or gypsum can be used ae ammendmente to reduce the sodium.
Additional management: Turf grasses require approximately 1.0 inch of water per week.
This addition of water will vary with types of grasses and soils present. Overwatering
will reduce soil aeration, decrease nltrogen and iron avallabllity and will promote
diseases. Grave should be mowed to a height of 1-2 inches. Increase mowiny height and
frequency during heat stress periods. Do not allow a thick thatch layer to develop.
Soil aerification should be performed annually in tl~e fall to help alleviate compaction.
Grave clippings can be returned to the lawn ae an additional source of nutrients to the Boil.
~en Potll n/John Menghini
Dedicated Exclusively ro Pro virliny Ouaily Analytical Services , =~I:'
O!11 r1y'1)I !Sill!(I IL IIrI'lll~141111p e?'SIII':IYB illlll C011!Illl"IIi•ilp•.r~4 unl'Ilrul'::I~Idm r~nnl he l~:pl U(luu`d 111 Wl11)IIi DI III Pi' ?Ya~~"'~fs
L, mr, wol L.
