' January 12, 1995
Bulldog Mine
Page 5
' In 1980 a series of intercepter wells were installed to
collect seepage downstream from the impoundment. In 1982 Homestake
' embarked on a two phased remedial action plan that involved first,
construction of a slurry cut-off wall and pumping system downstream
from the main impoundment, and second, a test grouting of a 200
foot section under the dams key. Both systems were in place by
August 1982.
This system effectively remediated seepage from the lower
' tailings impoundment. Final samples were collected from these wells
in June 1993 prior to final reclamation of this facility. There was
no detectable cyanide in these wells at that time. As evidenced in
' the 1993 DMG inspection report, "There is no evidence to suggest
that cyanide contaminated water is entering the ground water system
beneath the pond."(Attachment H).
' Conclusion
I trust this submittal adequately addresses questions of both
the Division of Mining and Geology and Water Quality Division in
regard to groundwater issues at the Bulldog Mine. As Homestake
desires to obtain final permit and reclamation release from this
t facility, we would be pleased to meet with you to address any
further questions you may have in this regard.
Please contact me at 415-983-8124 should you have any further
' questions or comments in this regard.
Sincerely,
HOMESTARE MINING COMPANY
V'
' Luke J.
