OF MINERALS Division Di,eoor
& GEOLOGY
FROM: Wally Erickson 06
RE: Water Analysis Reports, Determination of Baseline Conditions,
DMO 112, Howardsville Mill, Permit No. M-84-049.
DMG has received water analysis reports for 3 of the 5 quarters of hydrologic data,
required by Rules 6.4.20(9)(b) and (11 )(b), necessary to characterize baseline conditions.
DMG has requested the data from the remaining 2 quarters. Please find attached, the
following three documents:
Table, "Water Analysis Reports," showing metal values of concern, Metals listed on
the table are limited to parameters which appear to be in exceedance of chronic
aquatic life standards, based on the indicated hardness as CaCO3, or parameters for
which the lab may not have utilized the appropriate detection limits necessary to
verify compliance with the chronic aquatic life standards. Values of concern are
shown in bold print and underlined. I have attempted to organize the table to
illustrate trends and relation of sample locations. Suggestions for improvements to
data tables are requested. Table is 3 pages.
Letter from Jerry Sandell, CALCO, Inc., dated 1/14/98, with attached water analysis
reports from Root & Norton Laboratories, Inc., for the Howardsville Mill, 14 pages.
DMG 6/13/97 letter to Joe Baldwin, with attached copy of the approved hydrologic
monitoring plan for the Howardsville Mill, 9 pages.
Surface sample reports indicate Animas River flow on 6/15/97 to be 750 cfs, and on
10/4/97 to be 130 cfs. The incomplete data suggests that we have analysis reports for
high and low flow conditions. Therefore, commencement of DMG review for determination
of baseline conditions appears appropriate.
Water analysis reports for the remaining 2 quarters will be added to the table, and/or
forwarded upon receipt.
(end)
