VanSlyke, Supervising Geologist ~./
Division of Water Resources(",,{/{'
Gillette Sand and Gravel Inc., Gillette Pit,
File No. M-92-009,
We have reviewed the above referenced mining permit application per
your request of January 26, 1992. The application is to conduct
mining of sand and gravel and to reclaim the site by reseeding.
Process water is to be obtained from a small stream which is
ultimately tributary to the Arkansas River which is highly over-
appropriated. There is no mention ofi the operator having valid
water rights to be used far this purpose. The permit application
is also unclear as to whether the pit will encounter groundwater.
Based on this, we cannot recommend approval vfi this operation. We
would like to point out that should ground water be encountered,
the operator must obtain a valid well permit from this ofifiice along
with a substitute supply plan or plan fior augmentation. Also,
proof ofi valid water rights to be used in processing the gravel
will be required.
Should you have any additional questions, please contact this
office.
cc: Steve Witte, Division Engineer
Eddie Taylor, Water Commissioner
