ABSTRACT At the request of Somerset Mining Company, Commercial
Testing and Engineering performed a Phase I Toxicity Identification
Evaluation (TIE) on the company's Somerset Mine effluent. The
following effluent characterization tests were performed: initial
and baseline effluent toxicity tests, pH adjustment tests, EDTA
chelation and oxidant reduction tests. In addition, the effluent
was scanned for metals using Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP).
The above characterization tests were chosen based on past test
results from previous Whole Effluent Toxicity (WET) tests.
Although this Phase I TIE is not conclusive, results of the metals
scan, EDTA chelation test and the pH adjustment tests strongly
suggest toxicity due to high total dissolved solids (TDS) possibly
in solution with bicarbonates. Further testing will be required to
confirm TDS toxicity in Somerset Mine effluent.
COMMERCIAL TESTING & ENGIN EE RING CO.
~~n ai Vlaierm arked For Your ProieUion ~~`
