TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM
AmerAlia, Inc.
October 19, 1999
Page 7
The hydrologic reconnaissance completed on September 8, 1999 indicated two additional springs within
a one-mile radius of the Project. These springs, Sp-1 and Sp-2, are located in the Yellow Creek drainage
approximately 1 mile downstream of the confluence of Stakes Springs Draw and Corral Gulch
(Figure 3). Springs Sp-1 and Sp-2 issue from the Uinta Formation/colluvium on the opposite banks of
Yellow Creek in about the same location. Spring Sp-1 is an area of seepage on the west side of Yellow
Creek with an area of approximately 10 by 50 feet. Spring Sp-2 is a larger area of dispersed flow with an
extent of about 3 acres. The orientation of these springs and jointing of adjacent outcrops suggests
possible structural control. These springs may be associated with increased fracturing from the extension
of the Dudley Bluffs Graben system, which trends northwest toward this area. Because of the dispersed
flow of these springs, flow measurements were not recorded; however, flows in Yellow Creek appeared
to increase directly downstream of the springs by approximately 0.1 cfs. Field water quality of Sp-1 and
Sp-2 was measured on September 8, 1999 and is similar with temperatures of 61 to 66° F, pH of 7.6, and
electric conductiviTy of about 1,900 µS/cm.
4.0 SURFACE WATER
The Project area is located in the Yellow Creek drainage basin, which is a part of the Piceance
hydrologic basin. The Piceance Basin is divided into two drainage basins: Piceance Creek and Yellow
Creek. Piceance and Yellow creeks discharge north to White River. Yellow Creek begins at the
confluence of Stake Springs Draw and Corral Gulch. Four watershed drainage areas within the Yellow
Creek basin intersect the Project area: Stake Springs Draw, Corral Gulch, Yellow Creek Tributary ,and
Yellow Creek. These surface water drainages in the Project area are shown on Figure 1.
Five surface water stations are in the vicinity or downstream of the proposed Project site. The Yellow
Creek (09306255) and upper Corral Gulch (09306242) are currently active monitoring sites.
Characteristics of the streams in the Project area were derived from data on these USGS gaging stations
(USGS, 1999 and Zook and Sares, 1999), and several USGS reports (Weeks et ai., 1974, Tobin et al.,
1985, Taylor, 1987, and others). Locations of these stations are shown on Figure 1 and a summary of the
drainage characteristics is presented in Table 3. A summary of the surface water quality is in Table 4.
2ndFinalTechnicalMemo.doc 10/19/99 TRC HYDRO-GEO CONSULTANTS
