been halted. When water is again discharged through NPDES 008, which we expect to
occur sometime during the latter portion of the 2nd Qtr of 2002, we will innned_ lately
resume the accelerated WET testing.
2) Requested W;E.T., lnc. to send samples ofthe failed test waters to our analytical
testing lab, ACZ of Stevnboat'Springs so that they can run a metal suite with'a low
detection threshold ofabouf5ppb. Metals include As, Cd, Cr, P6, Ni; Ag, Zn, Na, and
K.
3) Requested W.E.T., Inc. to conduct bench top, aeration tests -on. the. first
accelerated sample collected 2 Jan 2002. Separate batches of water were. aerated for _
four (4) hours and twenty (20) hours before a Ce_ riodaphnia WET test' Results°show
both aeration periods produced no mortality in 100%`afrer.48 liours. Mr: Rawlings
believes, that, opr [rpuble may arise because what we are discharging is transitioiiitig
from agcoimdwater to surface water stability state. He also stated that fhe high TDS
values may exacerbate-[he 'stress that Ceriodaphnia undergo during the stability
transition phase: He has drafted a summary memo based on WPG's comments, and the
results of botli the.failed \VET tests and his bench top testing. A copy`of his memo is
attached to this letfer as Appendix A
4) Start in-house design work of simple modification methods based onincreasing
surface residence time and /, or aeration of water fo be discharged from NPDES 008,
whenever ifis te9c[ivated.
5), Conduct additional testing, design, etc as results and conditions warrant
~Thistswhatwecurrentlyknowaiid_howweintendfoproceed'forthenext§everalmoitths, WFC
will keep you informed as to our p"rogress. As`always,'siibsegtient findirigs may modify or '
invalidate the steps listed above.-
Meeting the State compliance standards is very important to WPC, and as such, we will find an
answer to the problem of the lailed NPDES 008 WGT tests.
Sincerely,., -
"foray dins
ivline igineer
2 c.
