• Kennecott Enerav: Class III Cultural Resource Inventory for the Colowyo Mine
2004-2005 Collom Drilling Program, Moffat County. Colorado, Metcalf
Archaeological Consultants, Inc., 7uly 2004
All areas for drilling have had an archaeological survey. No further work will be
required in the drilling areas.
VI. Description of Methods to be used to Conduct Coal Exploration and Reclamation.
1. Exploration Methods and Types of Equipment
The primary exploration method will be rotary and/or core drilling. On most sites,
both a pilot hole and an offset core hole will be drilled on the same drill site location.
All pilot holes will be logged utilizing geophysical down hole logging methods.
Equipment to be utilized will include truck mounted rotary drill rigs, water trucks to
supply drilling water, a small sized bulldozer (D4, D6, or D7 class) to construct and
reclaim drill locations and access roads, and a backhoe or dozer to construct mud pits
for drilling fluids where necessary, and various light duty vehicles to transport
personnel and supplies.
2. Road and Drill Hole Location Construction
Access to the drill sites will be primarily via existing ranch and hunting roads. Road
construction to drill sites that cannot be accessed via existing roads will only require
clearing brush with no or minimal topsoil removal. Should access road construction
be required on side slopes and rugged terrain requiring cut and fill construction,
operations will be conducted in a manner that protects both the topsoil resource and
the hydrologic balance
Only if necessary, topsoil will be removed and stockpiled or windrowed adjacent to
the access road under construction for later use during reclamation activities.
Where there is potential for erosion and resulting sedimentation, water bars will be
included during road construction. Newly constructed creek crossings should not be
required, but should existing stream crossings be deemed inadequate, the crossings
will be upgraded as necessary to minimize hydrologic impacts and provide safe
access.
Drill hole location sites will be about 50 ft. x 100 ft. (0.115 acres per site) to
accommodate drilling and support equipment. Attempts will be made to adjust
locations to minimize the disturbance at each site. For instance, sites along steeper
slopes will be longer and narrower, taking advantage of space created along the
access road. Also, where possible, the access road and/or site(s) will be moved or
N:\CCC ENGWAN\DMG\NOI bOC\07NOA07 N01 rext.doc
lOR6/06
