• 2.04.5 General Description of Hydrology and Geology
This application provides a description of geology, hydrology and ground
and surface quality and quantity on all lands within the permit area,
the adjacent area and the general area, as defined in Section 1.04
(DEFINITIONS) of the Colorado Regulatory Program.
Because of the past and present mining activities along Hay Gulch, a
good general knowledge of the geology of the area has been developed.
Details on the geology of the permit and adjacent areas are set forth in
Section 2.04.6. The regional geology is shown graphically on the
Regional Geology Map (Map 5).
The "general area" with respect to hydrology is defined by Section 1.04
as that topographic basin that surrounds the area to be mined during the
life of the operation. The-Sunbelt operation is a small portion of the
mining that is being conducted in the general area on either side of Hay
• Gulch. Information on the hydrology of the general, adjacent, and
permit areas is set forth in Section 2.04.7.
2.04.6 Geologv Description
The coal mined from the Peacock Coal Mine is located in the northwestern
flank of the San Juan Basin southwest of Hesperus, in La Plata,
Colorado. Several streams, such as Hay Gulch, have cut a deep canyon
across the field.
As an "old coal field", the geology around Hesperus, Colorado has been
thoroughly studied and many reports on the area have been published.
Coal mining has been conducted in the area since around the turn of the
century.

2.04-8
