• During this century, many mining operations have been developed and
operated along Hay Gulch. Some of the coal production from the Hesperus
mines was used for domestic heating in southwestern Colorado. Other
coal production has gone to utilities, cement plants, and miscellaneous
industrial users.
Historic production rates from the Peacock Coal Mine since 1922 are
shown in Table 1, Historic Production from the Peacock Coal Mine. The
previous operators of the mine are likewise listed in Table 2, Previous
Operators of the Peacock Coal Mine. The extent of the previous
underground operations at the Peacock Coal Mine are shown on the Mine
Plan Map (Map 8).
Other than past mining activities, the permit and adjacent area have had
no significant historic events take place on it. In many areas along
Hay Gulch, only remnants remain of what were once a working coal
operations. Although several mines still remain along Hay Gulch,
abandoned waste dumps and deteriorating structures of the old mines can
still be seen from County Road 120.
The permit area of Sunbelt was not the location of any events important
to the course of local, state or national history. Nothing from the old
Peacock Mine has been associated with people important in local ,.state
or national history. None of the existing facilities of the Peacock
Coal Mine have any characteristics to make them more representative or
more distinct than many of the other sites in the surrounding country
that are near to the existing mining activities.
In addition, there is nothing historic about the permit area. Sites of
past coal mining in the permit and adjacent areas are merely old. The
removal of old mining and associated sites will not constitute an impact
on the significant historic resources of the region. Rather, the
proposed mining and reclamation operations by Sunbelt will be extremely
beneficial in eliminating old portal face up areas and deteriorating
structures. Following reclamation of the proposed surface facilities at
the operation, the area will be again useful as rangeland.
2.04-6
